Edouard Manet'nin Çimlerin Üzerinde Öğle Yemeği tablosu 1863 yılında Salon des Refuses'de sergilenir ve çıplak bir kadının giyinik iki erkekle öğle yemeği yediği skandal konusuyla infial yaratır. Bu olaydan tam iki yıl sonra Claude Monet, bu eserin kendi versiyonunu yapmaya karar verir.
Orijinal eserin iki parçası günümüzde Musee d'Orsay'da sergileniyor. Ancak eserin hikayesi bir hayli ilginç. 1880’lerin sonunda kirasını ödeyemeyen Monet, orijinal eseri ev sahibine kefil olarak vermiş. Ancak tablosunu geri almak için yeterli paraya sahip olduğunda, eser mahzende rulo halinde geçirdiği zaman sebebiyle bir hayli küflenmiş. Monet, 1884 yılında eseri bu sebeple kesmiş ve üç parçasını saklamış. Fakat üçüncü parçanın nerede olduğu hala bilinmiyor.
